Judicial Vicar
The Office of the Metropolitan Tribunal
The Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of San Francisco plays a vital role in upholding the integrity of the Church’s mission and sacramental life, while also protecting the rights of all the faithful. This is carried out according to the Code of Canon Law, which governs the Church’s legal and pastoral procedures.
Acting in the name of the Archbishop, the Judicial Vicar leads the Tribunal and is assisted by a qualified staff trained in Canon Law. These dedicated individuals offer consultation and guidance on canonical matters and serve within the Church’s judicial system to provide clarity and justice to those seeking it.
Church trials are conducted to:
Pursue or defend individual rights
Declare juridical facts
Apply appropriate canonical penalties
While much of the Tribunal’s current work focuses on marriage nullity cases (annulments), its mission is not solely legal—it is deeply pastoral. The Tribunal exists to serve the people of God with compassion, accompanying individuals as they seek healing and truth within the life of the Church.
