2022-2023 Synod Activity

Thank you for your participation in the diocesan phase of the synodal way.

The Holy Father has convened a Synod and has asked the People of God to participate in the synodal process. The Synod will take place from 2021 – 2024, beginning at the Archdiocesan level and culminating in a Ordinary General Assembly of Bishops in Rome.

What is the Synodal Way all about?

Watch this short video with Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone explaining what the Synodal way is all about.

What is the role of the Archdiocese?

Each diocese carried out the Synodal Process in a way that best responded to their local circumstances. In the Archdiocese of San Francisco, worked with Catholic Leadership Institute to implement the Disciple Maker Index (DMI) survey at every parish in the Archdiocese from January 15, 2022 to February 15, 2022. The DMI survey is a nationally recognized survey administered at parishes around the United States and Canada since 2013 by The Catholic Leadership Institute. The results from this survey provided the baseline feedback from which content for engagement sessions were developed in February and March. Maximum participation was encouraged through all Archdiocesan structures and communication channels to involve the greatest number of people as possible.

What is the role of the parish?

Every parish in the Archdiocese offered the Disciple Maker Index (DMI) survey from January 15, 2022 to February 15, 2022 both online as a link from individual parish websites and as a hardcopy survey. Parishioners took the DMI through their parish so the data could accurately reflect the feedback from each parish community.

Who participated in the October General Assembly of Bishops?

The Vatican has announced a list of participants who will join the Holy Father in Rome for the Synod on Synodality assembly. The individuals chosen to attend include cardinals, bishops, priests, religious, and laity. Most were chosen by Pope Francis, others were selected by the bishops conferences around the world.

What were they discussing?

Drawing on listening sessions already conducted worldwide at the diocesan, national, and continental level, the Instrumentum Laboris or “working tool” for the upcoming 16th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops covers a range of topics highlighted in reports from listening sessions held with Catholics at the most local levels.

Archdiocesan Synodal Synthesis

The Archdiocese of San Francisco held listening sessions, facilitated by the Catholic Leadership Institute, online and in-person, and invited parishioners to participate in a Disciple Maker Index Survey in 2021 and 2022. This report was then sent to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to be included in a National Report sent to Rome. You can download the Synodal Synthesis in PDF format.
